Jordaan was born in Springs, Gauteng. He is a painter, sculptor and graphic artist.
Jan Jordaan completed a BA Fine Arts at the University of Pretoria in 1973 and spent the next two years lecturing at Potchefstroom University and the Durban Institute of Technology. In 1984, he spent six months at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and repeated another six-month stint at this institute in 1991. In 1998, Jan Jordaan became a consultant to the Goree Institute on Goree Island, Senegal. In 1998 Jordaan initiated the UDHR International Print Portfolio for Artists for Human Rights in Durban. He currently lectures printmaking at the Durban Institute of Technology and functions as director of Art for Humanity.
Since 1973 he has participated in group exhibitions in SA and abroad.
He was instrumental in organising exchange exhibitions between Durban and various cities abroad. He was in charge of the co-ordination and printing of the 1996 Images of Human Rights Portfolio.
His work is represented in major SA public and private collections.
