de Jongh, Tinus
Tinus De Jongh (1885 – 1942) was born in Amsterdam, Holland. Mainly self-taught with some study in Amsterdam. He was forbidden to study art by his parents; took a post with a firm of decorators in Amsterdam but left after two years to concentrate on painting; painted street scenes, interiors and landscapes in Amsterdam tradition. Achieved local recognition, his work was purchased by the Stedelijk Museum.
Tinus De Jongh came to South Africa in 1921. He began painting views of Cape Town, during the early years he lived in a one-room cottage at Deep River with wife and three children; painting of South African Houses of Parliament purchased by South African Government for office of High-Commissioner in London.
Tinus one-man exhibition in Johannesburg in 1922, traveled and painted on the platteland. He gradually gaining popularity for his mountain landscapes. Exhibited in London in 1932. In 1934 a sensational court case in which Louis Woolf, his Cape Town art dealer, was accused of having forged De Jongh’s signature on thousands of his etchings. Prices for Tinus De Jongh’s paintings rose steeply following his death in 1942.
