Dingemans, Johannes Wilhelmus (Jan)
Jan Dingemans was born in 1921 in Breda, The Netherlands and resided in South Africa in 1948. He’s a painter of figures, still life and abstract pictures, his artworks are in oil. He studied between 1943 – 1945 Academy of Art, Tilburg, The Netherlands, gaining a Teaching Diploma; 1946 Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en de Hogere Institute, Antwerp, Belgium.
He presents two personalities in his painting; the one is exploratory, seeking new forms in familiar still-life and nude subject matter. The other better-known, image is popular and mannerist. In works of the latter order, Dingemans concentrates on only slightly varying compositions of African tribal figures, in which he compromises with contemporary idioms by providing an amorphous, rainbow coloured, abstract background, upon which he superimposes the linear, stylized groups of human subjects.
He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in The Netherlands, in 1956 and 1960 Quadrennial Exhibitions, South Africa and United States of America.
